Maze Runner: The Death Cure tops domestic box office with $23.5 million

Following a three-week reign by Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, 20th Century Fox sequel Maze Runner: The Death Cure opened in first place at the domestic box office with $23.5 million from 3,787 theaters, an average of $6,205 per theater. Back in 2014, the original Maze Runner debuted with $32.5 million and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opened to $30.3 million in 2015. Internationally, Maze Runner The Death Cure grossed $62.6 million in 58 markets to take its overseas total to $82 million and worldwide total to $105.5 million. Made for $62 million, The Death Cure was again directed by Wes Ball and stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Ki Hong Lee, Barry Pepper, Will Poulter, and Patricia Clarkson.

Even though it dropped a spot to second place, Sony Pictures‘ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle dipped just 15.9% in ticket sales with $16.4 million its sixth weekend, for a North American total of $338 million. Internationally, Jumanji added another $17.7 million this weekend to push its overseas total to $484 million ($72.4 million from China) and worldwide total to an impressive $822 million. Welcome to the Jungle is now Sony’s fifth film of all time, surpassing Spider-Man‘s $821.7 million globally. Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale. It was made for $90 million.

The Scott Cooper-directed Hostiles (Entertainment Studios) increased its theater count to 2,816, which allowed the Western to climb to the third spot at the domestic box office with $10.2 million. The film, starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Jesse Plemons, Ben Foster, and Adam Beach, has earned $12.1 million so far.

Like JumanjiThe Greatest Showman (20th Century Fox) had a minimal drop of 10.8% in sales, earning $9.5 million in fourth place. The film is up to $126.5 million domestically after six weeks. Internationally, the film added $10.1 million from 45 markets to bring its overseas total to $133 million and global total to $259.5 million. Directed by Michael Gracey, The Greatest Showman cost $84 million to make and stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.

Steven Spielberg’s The Post (20th Century Fox), starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, rounded out the top five with $8.9 million to bring its six-week total to $58.5 million. It cost $50 million to make.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ 12 Strong dropped four spots to sixth place its second weekend. The film added $8.6 million and has collected $29.8 million so far. Directed by Nicoli Fuglsig, 12 Strong stars Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon, Michael Peña, and Trevante Rhodes.

Also dropping four spots to seventh was Den of Thieves (STXfilms), which grossed $8.4 million and has earned $28.5 million after two weeks. The Christian Gudegast film stars Gerard Butler, Pablo Schreiber, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Brian van Holt and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

Following 13 Oscar nominations, Guilldermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water (Fox Searchlight Pictures) increased its theater count to 1,854 and collected $5.7 million in eighth place, for a total of $37.7 million after nine weeks. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer.

In the ninth spot, Warner Bros.’ Paddington 2 added $5.6 million and the sequel has grossed $32 million domestically after three weeks. Internationally, the movie has earned $153.8 million and is at $185.8 million worldwide. The first film ended up with $268 million globally in 2015. The Paul King-directed family film stars Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Brendan Gleeson, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Hugh Grant, and Ben Whishaw.

Opening in tenth place, Indian epic Padmaavat (Viva Pictures Distribution) earned $4.3 million from 324 theaters, an impressive average of $13,188 per location. The Sanjay Leela Bhansali film stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh.

Also, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi added $4.2 million domestically and $4.8 million internationally this weekend, which means the film has now earned $610.7 million in North America and $700.7 million overseas. The worldwide total is now at $1.311 billion. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
