Back in 2004, a little zombie rom-com called Shaun of the Dead hit these shores, launching a wave of British genre films and filmmakers that has grown incrementally since then. It introduced many Americans to director Edgar Wright and actor/comedians Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and its 2007 follow-up, Hot Fuzz, a spoof of big budget police action-comedies, was received just as well.
It’s now four years on and Wright went onto direct Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Pegg and Frost co-wrote and starred in this year’s Paul, but many of their fans are wondering when they’re going to get back to making the third chapter in what’s been lovingly referred to as the “Blood and Ice Cream” or “Three Flavours Cornetto” Trilogy, depending on what side of the Atlantic you lay on and whether or not you need to have explained what a “Cornetto” is. (If you’ve seen either previous movie, you won’t need to.) At one point, it was going to be titled “The World’s End,” but who knows if that’s still the case?
Director Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg must both be sick of being asked about it by now, so instead, ComingSoon.net asked Nick Frost about it when we sat down with him at the junket for Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin. In the movie, Frost and Pegg play two detectives, both named Thompson, both completely inept and ineffectual. The movie is a bit of a Hot Fuzz reunion in itself, because it’s co-written by Wright and Joe Cornish, who wrote and directed one of the year’s best movies (in our opinion) Attack the Block and also did a lot of the behind-the-scenes documentary stuff on Hot Fuzz.
So what does Nick Frost have to say about progress on the real reunion of Wright, Pegg and Frost?
“There is a draft out there, which I’ve read, and it’s great, and I think our plan is to crack on and shoot next year. Touch wood. They move and they change but we definitely want to get on with it.”
Touch wood, indeed, but that’s certainly a good sign!
