Exclusive: Gary Oldman May Return for Smiley’s People

Actor Gary Oldman was honored tonight at IFP’s Gotham Independent Film Awards, receiving a lovely tribute by fellow actor Alec Baldwin including a fantastic presentation of footage showcasing some of Oldman’s greatest roles including his incredible turn as George Smiley in the upcoming adaptation of John le Carré’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. (Look for our review soon.)

After the presentation, ComingSoon.net spoke with Oldman and he told us that Working Title are already talking about doing a follow-up to “Tinker, Tailor” that would allow Oldman to return as George Smiley.

“I think they’re whispering now that they might do ‘Smiley’s People,’ not so much as a sequel, because there’s a book in the middle actually, but we’ve set up the world and we’ll revisit,” he told us about the project that would have him playing Smiley even older than he is in “Tinker, Tailor.”

Look for more from our interview with Oldman as well as a few bits from his co-star Colin Firth and director Tomas Alfredson sometime next week before Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy opens in New York and L.A. on December 9.
