Producers Offer 300: Battle of Artemisia Update

It’s been a few months since word broke that Noam Murro (Smart People) would be helming the the 300 quasi-sequel, 300: Battle of Atemisia. Today, producers Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari spoke about the project at the junket for their latest, Immortals.

“We have to say that Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, his writing partner, have killed it,” said Canton of the screenplay. “They’ve done a tremendous job making a highly intelligent, epic story that will stand on its own. But it’s not a conventional sequel and, for what we do, that’s what you hope and pray for. That you can be original and authentic at the same time.”

There’s no announced timeline for the project as of yet, but Nunnari says that it’s now officially “a work in progress… as opposed to a year ago where it was just something we wanted to do.”

As for the rumors of a potential Gerard Butler cameo (as Frank Miller has said that Leonidas appears in his graphic novel, Xerxes, of which the film is somewhat based), Canton played it coy.

“It’s too early to say,” he smiled, “but we know the answer.”

Canton also spoke briefly about his next film, Piranha 3DD, which is officially set for a TBA release in 2012.

“It’s definitely coming out in January. That’s what I hear from the Weinsteins” Canton said, then adding with a laugh: “Which probably means March.”

Immortals hits theaters on November 11th. Check back soon for full interviews with the cast and crew.
