Walt Disney Pictures has plans to develop Tokihiko Matsuura’s manga series “Tuxedo Gin” and has brought Ben Garant on board to write the screenplay. Deadline has the news, saying that film version is planned to feature the shortened title Tux.
Originally published between 1997 and 2000, the 15-volume manga tells the story of Ginji Kusanagi, a high school boxer who perishes in an motorcycle accident on the way to a date with Minako, the girl of his dreams. In the afterlife, Ginji is told that he can return to Earth, but that he only has enough Karmic points to do so as a penguin. Hatching from an egg in a Tokyo aquarium, Ginji must protect Minako in his new, animal form while performing good deeds to tilt the Karmic balance and, hopefully, win his old body back.
Garant is best known as the creator and one of the stars of “Reno 911” and is also responsible for scripting the Shawn Levy family comedy A Night at the Museum, for which the tone of Tux will presumably aim.
