Vulture is reporting that Will Smith and Jay-Z are in negotiations with Oscar-winning screenwriter and actress Emma Thompson to pen the script for Annie at Columbia Pictures.
The updated version of the musical would star Smith’s daughter, Willow.
Thompson is currently co-starring with Smith in Columbia’s Men in Black III.
The Broadway musical “Annie” was based upon the popular comic strip and radio show, “Little Orphan Annie” and features songs with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin and a book by Thomas Meehan. The show originally opened in 1977, and immediately became a hit, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
In 1982, Columbia Pictures released a film adaptation directed by John Huston and starring Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, Tim Curry, and Aileen Quinn as Annie.
