Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining Returns to Theaters

Stanley Kubrick’s immortal 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining returns to theaters this month

Stephen King might have been bummed about it upon release, but there’s no denying that Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 avant garde interpretation of King’s supernatural psyche-thriller novel The Shining is one of the scariest movies ever made. Ever. This writer just re-watched it. Trust me. It’s freaking scary.

But to see The Shining on the big screen isn’t just scary, it’s soul smothering. Now, Fathom Events will prove that when they bring The Shining back to cinemas nationwide for a special two-day event this October as part of Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies’ TCM Big Screen Classics series.

TCM Big Screen Classics: The Shining will screen Sunday, October 23 and Wednesday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time (both days) and will include exclusive commentary by Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz.

From a script he co-adapted from the King source, director Kubrick melds vivid performances, menacing settings, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a macabre milestone. In a signature role, Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, who’s come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel, as the off-season caretaker with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd). Torrance has never been there before – or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder.

Tickets to TCM Big Screen Classics: The Shining can be purchased online from the Fathom Events website.

Will you be hitting the theater to see this masterpiece again? Maybe for the first time?
