Star Wars: The Force Awakens is Now the #3 Movie of All-Time

Star Wars: The Force Awakens continued its record-setting run this weekend to reach $1.733 billion globally to now stand as the #3 movie of all-time worldwide, passing Jurassic World‘s $1.669 billion. Domestically, it has also now become the first movie ever to cross $800 million, with an estimated $812 million to date.

This weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens added an estimated $145.9 million globally, including $41.6 million domestically in first place and $104.3 million internationally. China led the way as the final international market to open with an estimated two-day weekend total of $53 million, making it the highest Saturday/Sunday opening of all-time there as well as the biggest industry opening Saturday of all-time. Elsewhere, the film passed Skyfall in the UK to become the highest-grossing movie in industry history there and Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now the #3 highest-grossing movie of all-time within Europe. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is also now the highest-grossing Disney release of all-time in Russia, where it is also the #3 all-time highest grossing release in industry history. In Australia, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the #2 highest-grossing movie of all-time.

With this weekend, IMAX global box office now totals $179 million and in record-setting time: 26 days vs. Avatar, which reached $175 million in 58 days. For China, Star Wars: The Force Awakens posted the best-ever Saturday for IMAX with $4.3 million, overtaking the previous best-ever Saturday. The $8.1 million to date also far exceeds any previous 2-day opening.

Domestically, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the #1 movie of all-time and has reached $812 million. Internationally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now the #7 movie of all-time with $921.4 million, passing Transformers: Age of Extinction ($858.6 million), Frozen ($875.7 million) and Marvel’s The Avengers ($896.2 million). Worldwide, the only two movies still ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens are James Cameron’s Titanic ($2.187 billion) and Avatar ($2.788 billion).

Directed by J.J. Abrams, the movie stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk produced the film with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Lawrence Kasdan & J.J. Abrams and Michael Arndt.

Domestically, 20th Century Fox expanded Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant into 3,375 theaters which allowed the film to climb to the #2 spot with an estimated $38 million. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, the $135-million budgeted movie has earned $39.6 million after three weeks.

Dropping a spot to third was Daddy’s Home with $15 million. Starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, the Paramount Pictures comedy has already earned $116.3 million after three weeks.

Gramercy Pictures’ new horror film The Forest, starring Natalie Dormer (“Game of Thrones”) and Taylor Kinney, opened in fourth place with an estimated $13.1 million from 2,451 theaters, an average of $5,340 per theater. The movie performed on the distributor’s high end of expectations and cost just $10 million to make.

Universal Pictures’ Sisters, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, rounded out the top five with $7.2 million its fourth weekend. The comedy has earned $74.9 million on a budget of only $30 million.

Also, Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight suffered a pretty big drop of 60% in sales its third weekend. The film added $6.4 million in sixth place to take its total to $41.5 million. It cost about $44 million to produce. And Paramount’s The Big Short earned $6.3 million to remain in the seventh spot, pushing its total to $42.8 million on a budget of just $28 million.
