Box Office Predictions: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ vs. ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’

Straight Outta Compton! Nice to see this one getting a (predicted) victory, it’s a solid watch, especially for those that grew up with the music. Will the R-rating hurt? How about that running time? The less than 3k theaters? Okay, okay, none of that will help, but if Notorious can open at $20.5 million then you have to love Straight Outta Compton‘s prospects because it’s about far more. I mean, we’re basically talking the roots of all West Coast rap here. How about $35.4 million? That’s the number I like.

Next up we’re talking The Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Though it seems to be relatively likable with 2 out of 3 RT critics giving it an above average “fresh” ranking, there’s something about the marketing which just screams “old school silliness, don’t bother.” Now I know it’s Guy Ritchie, and I know people I trust like it, so I’m a more informed viewer who wants to see the film. But what about the general public? I can’t figure more than 2 million of them will be scooping up a ticket, so it will come in at $18.9 million.

The last two are horrible to even consider, so I’m going to list mode ’em. Fantastic Four opened dead on arrival, and this weekend won’t be any better. It’s not like word of mouth will save a catastrophe, so look for a huge bleed down to $11.7 million. Just a lotta sadness happening there. Finally, The Gift. It was made for nothing, so my $5.8 million call is likely just fine for STX Entertainment. There’s a lesson to be learned there, eh?

Thanks for excusing the brevity, that’s it for me, your turn now!
