Tons of criticism has fallen on Marvel Studios due to the thought that all their films are too similar. The tone, the look, and even the type of actors, to some degree, are the same with each film. Of course these films all make huge amounts of money, so Marvel isn’t going to mix up the formula now. However, Marvel tries to brand each film differently. Captain America: Winter Soldier is a political thriller, Guardians of the Galaxy is a space opera, and most recently, Ant-Man is a heist film. Now, according to the film’s cinematographer, Doctor Strange is going to be “Marvel’s Fantasia.”
Speaking at a BAFTA Masterclass in London recently, Ben Davis goes on to qualify that statement a little, “Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”
We really don’t know much about Doctor Strange at this point. Casting Benedict Cumberbatch was almost a letdown because of how obvious it is, but other than that, everything has been a surprise. The first big surprise was the hiring of Scott Derrickson (Sinister) as the director. Known for his horror films, everyone’s been curious how his style would translate to the Sorcerer Supreme.
“It’s all very out there,” Davis continued. “I can’t really say much more about it, I’m afraid. But I think it’ll be really interesting, and it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say.”
So what are we in for with Doctor Strange? With the cast, it’ll be well-acted, for sure. From what the cinematographer has to say, it’s also going to be dark and very trippy. For those people that say Marvel’s films all look the same, this has to pique their interest. If you’re not curious what Marvel’s version of Fantasia would look like, then nothing will convince you.
Doctor Strange will be released November 4, 2016.
