I can’t deny it, I’m excited for the next Spider-Man film, starring Tom Holland. Now that Marvel Studios is involved, I have high hopes for the future of the beloved character. The only worry I have so far is who they’ll have as the villain this time around. We’ve seen three Goblins, a bad Rhino, a bad Electro, and let’s not even start with Venom. Other than Doc Ock, there really haven’t been any great villains in the five Spider-Man films. Next, if the rumors reported by Heroic Hollywood are to be believed, that might finally change.
According to the rumors, Kraven the Hunter could be the next villain in the Spider-Man series. Kraven is a big game hunter with enhanced senses and strength, and believes hunting and capturing Spider-Man is the greatest challenge. The exciting thing about this choice of villain is how different he is from previous villains. He’s not going to blow up Manhattan. He has no ties to OsCorp or Peter’s family history. Kraven is only there to terrorize Spider-Man. That would allow this film to feel more intimate, similar to Ant-Man.
Unfortunately, the most famous Kraven story is not suitable for this film. In “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” Kraven seemingly kills Spider-Man and goes onto impersonate the hero to prove he’s superior. Of course, since this is a comic, Spider-Man literally digs himself out of the grave and defeats the villain. The story ends with a surprise moment that I won’t spoil here, but safe to say, won’t make its way into a Marvel-produced film. So, if they decide to go with Kraven, it’s likely they’ll borrow bits and pieces from a variety of stories.
We’re still pretty far away from any confirmed news about the film’s story. The writers have said they haven’t even begun writing yet, so the choice of villain could actually change. That being said, I really hope the villain is Kraven. If not Kraven, then please no more Goblins.
The untitled Spider-Man film is scheduled for a July 28, 2017 release.
