Box Office Predictions: ‘Terminator Genisys’ Looks to Fend off Three Others

Terminator Genisys occupies my top spot with a $42 million call, a carbon copy of Terminator Salvation‘s $42.5 million opening in 2009. Well, not exactly a carbon copy, as inflation, less theaters, and no predicted sequel bump mean this is actually around a ten percent dip for Genisys, which it definitely earned. I like this one’s prospects overall slightly better, especially internationally with Arnold Schwarzenegger involved, but they better have kept the production budget under $200 million this time around as clearly the marketing budget has been massive.

Don’t sleep on Magic Mike XXL this weekend though, I could even see it winning with my $36 million prediction. The first one opened at $39 million, but that wasn’t over a holiday weekend and this one hit theaters along with Genisys yesterday. Fireworks on Friday are going to cut into the Mike money, but it could have a huge Friday evening and be in the lead headed into Sunday.

Inside Out rolling in at $33.3 million will put them over $300 million worldwide, not awful, but clearly there’s a lot more work to do internationally, though several territories including the UK, China and Germany haven’t even seen this one yet and won’t until late July, early October.

Finally, Jurassic World occupies my fourth slot with $31.5 million – clearly not too shabby. Unless you consider $1.25 billion worldwide shabby and, in that case, can I live with you?

Now it’s your turn, predictions away!

SIDE NOTE: Some of the theater numbers below are estimates. We’ll have the actual counts in Sunday’s wrap-up article.
