‘Ant-Man’, ‘American Ultra’, ‘Southpaw’, ‘Vacation’ & More in Today’s MPAA Ratings Bulletin

A pretty hefty bulletin today and we’ll begin with the latest PG-13 rating for a Marvel film as Ant-Man gets the “find for families but edgy enough for the teens” rating to make sure the target demographic of everyone is satisfied. As a matter of fact, of the more notable films on today’s board only Ant-Man and the upcoming Secret In Their Eyes remake (which saw its first trailer released earlier today) are the only two PG-13 ratings in the bulletin.
Before we get to the R-rated titles, however, we do have one PG rated film, that being Sony’s Goosebumps, an adaptation of the R.L. Stine novels starring Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Ken Marino and Ella Wahlestedt.
As for the R-rated titles, well, we start with a pretty hard R in American Ultra, a re-teaming of Adventureland stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg in a story of a stoner and his girlfriend’s sleepy, small-town existence as it’s disrupted when his past comes back to haunt him in the form of a government operation set to wipe him out. Oh my!
We have the to-be-expected R-rating for the found footage horror The Gallows and same goes for Vacation reboot/remake/whatever. The Jake Gyllenhaal-led boxing drama Southpaw also scored an R as did the Zac Efron-is-a-DJ movie We Are Your Friends.
