Kevin Smith Confirms ‘Mallrats 2’ is In the Works

A couple days ago Kevin Smith Mallrats in a tweet that ended with: “But after that? I smell a rat…”

Now, Smith has confirmed the news in an interview with Tucson’s Rock 102 KFMA saying, “[Mallrats 2 is] half scripted right now and we’re pulling our loot together… We’ve got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we’re going to be shooting.”

As for how the film came about, Smith added:

“It kind of came out of nowhere… Lately I’ve been doing this thing where I’m like ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career or do you just want to have fun?’ Nobody’s clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years.”

Smith’s retirement plans are clearly out the window and it appears “fun” is definitely in order as he’s found a way to finance these smaller features and bring them to his rabid fanbase. It will be interesting, however, to see if there is any chance of one of these films breaking out, and reaching a much larger audience.

Smith’s highest grossing domestic release was 2010’s Cop Out starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, grossing over $44 million. Mallrats, while I personally love it, was a box office bust 20 years ago, grossing just over $2 million on a $6 million budget. The film starred Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Michael Rooker, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes and I can only expect (and sort of hope) he’ll be getting the same gang back together.
