Last night I watched David Robert Mitchell‘s It Follows, a film I hesitate to call a horror film, because I think that immediately conjures an idea of what kind of movie it isn’t. This isn’t a movie hellbent on jump scares and gore to keep you “on the edge of your seat” or vomiting in your popcorn. This is more the atmospheric, creepy kind of thriller. The kind that can make your skin crawl. Suffice to say, I quite enjoyed it.
I’ll save most of my breakdown for my full review, so for now here’s the official synopsis:
For nineteen-year-old Jay, Autumn should be about school, boys and week-ends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind.
The character of Jay, some of you may be interested to know, is played by Maika Monroe, who played the sister in Adam Wingard‘s much-loved The Guest, and It Follows has something else in common with Wingard’s feature, a satisfyingly synth-based score, this one created by Disasterpeace and today we have three tracks to listen to from said score (via The Playlist).
I’m not necessarily sure how well you’ll think these tracks work without the accompanying imagery, but they’ll give you a good idea of what’s in store.
Listen to the tracks below and be on the lookout for the movie, which hits theaters on March 13. I’ve also included the film’s trailer if you’re interested in checking that out, but if you’re interested in the movie whatsoever, don’t watch it. I went in 100% cold, not even knowing the plot, and feel my experience as all the better as a result.
