The original Poltergeist is a bit of classic horror and I don’t think anyone familiar with it really has all that high of hopes for the upcoming remake. I mean, what could a remake possibly offer that you don’t get from the original? A movie that was rated PG and will likely be more disturbing than anything this remake has to offer. You tell me, will we be getting this in the new Poltergeist?
One thing we’ll be getting for sure is a lot of hands. Hands, hands, hands everywhere. At least, if these first pictures, courtesy of USA Today, are any indication.
Addressing the remake concerns director Gil Kenan (Monster House) tells USA Today, “Whenever someone approaches material that’s so beloved, there’s a reflexive reaction to be worried. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously. We’re working to make a Poltergeist film that lives up to the original’s legacy.”
Producer Sam Raimi, who recently saw his Evil Dead remade, commented saying, “The original film commented on how we’ve let television get out of control, babysitting our kids. It’s only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.”
Kenan says of the remae, “The film is super-scary. And it’s scary on its own terms. I am excited to finally be able to share that with the world.”
We’ll see. The film stars Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino and Jane Adams and will be hitting theaters on July 24. The first trailer arrives in two days, but for now check out these first pictures.
