2014 Los Angeles Film Critics Awards: ‘Boyhood’ and ‘Grand Budapest Hotel’ Big Winners

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their 2014 film awards today and it was Boyhood taking Best Picture and The Grand Budapest Hotel claiming runner up as both films did very well with the LA critics org.

All the updates and my previous commentary are included below and I have already updated the Oscar Overture with Boyhood‘s win, click here for that.

UPDATES

UPDATE #15: And Best Picture goes to… Boyhood

UPDATE #14: Wonderful surprise at Best Actor with Tom Hardy (Locke) taking it with Michael Keaton (Birdman) getting runner-up status.

UPDATE #13: Best Director goes to Richard Linklater for Boyhood with Wes Anderson coming in runner-up for The Grand Budapest Hotel

UPDATE #12: Best Foreign Language feature goes to Ida with Cannes winner Winter Sleep claiming runner-up.

UPDATE #11: The New Generation award has gone to Selma director Ava DuVernay.

UPDATE #10: Best Screenplay is another win for The Grand Budapest Hotel with Birdman coming in as runner-up.

UPDATE #9: Best Actress goes to Patricia Arquette for Boyhood with Julianne Moore (Still Alice) serving as runner-up. Interesting considering Arquette will be campaigning for Supporting Actress at the Oscar while Moore is perceived as the Best Actress front-runner.

UPDATE #8: Best Documentary goes to Citizenfour with the Roger Ebert doc, Life Itself, serving as runner-up. I’m actually a little surprised by this, figuring LA would go with something like Jodorowsky’s Dune.

UPDATE #7: Best Cinematography is an obvious one, going to Emmanuel Lubezki for Birdman with Dick Pope‘s wonderful Mr. Turner work taking runner-up.

UPDATE #6: Best Supporting Actress goes to Agata Kulesza for the foreign language Oscar contender Ida with a surprising, yet welcome, runner-up win for Rene Russo for Nightcrawler.

UPDATE #5: Best Animation goes to The Tale of Princess Kaguya with The Lego Movie taking runner-up. I don’t have much of an opinion on this as I haven’t seen Kaguya and don’t particularly think it has been a very good year for studio animated movies.

UPDATE #4: Best Score is a tie between Jonny Greenwood (Inherent Vice) and Mica Levi (Under the Skin). If you ask me, the Birdman score is the best I’ve heard this year, that movie doesn’t work without that score… I guess you could say the same for Under the Skin, but Inherent Vice(?) Uh, no.

UPDATE #3: Best Production Design goes to Adam Stockhausen for The Grand Budapest Hotel, after the runner-up win for Editing the group clearly liked Wes Anderson‘s latest.

UPDATE #2: Best Supporting Actor goes to J.K. Simmons for Whiplash while Edward Norton takes runner-up for his great performance in Birdman. Best Production Design is next…

UPDATE #1: Best Editing goes to Sandra Adair for Boyhood. Interesting to see The Grand Budapest Hotel as the runner-up as I’m personally pulling for Tom Cross’ work on Whiplash to get some recognition.

Last year it was a tie for Best Picture with Gravity and Her taking the org’s top honors. In fact, there were ties in several categories

This is the last of what I consider to be the current year’s “major” precursor awards until the new year begins with the Golden Globe Awards on January 11, 2015. However, next week we will have the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe Award nominations and, the following Monday, nominations for the Critics Choice Awards. You can find the schedule here.
