Well, this is something of an interesting development. When David Fincher was first attached to direct the Untitled Steve Jobs Biopic for Sony it was famously reported Fincher told the studio he would direct it on one condition, that being Christian Bale played the lead role. Less than a month after that story, Fincher was off the picture for reasons beyond the actor requirement such as looking for $10 million in upfront fees and control over marketing. It seemed the bad blood that boiled overboard during The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was too much to overcome.
Now, fast forward six months, Danny Boyle is currently attached to direct the screenplay from Aaron Sorkin and Variety reports Bale is indeed in talks to star. Leonardo DiCaprio had been circling the picture, which would have reunited him with his The Beach director, but he is now taking a break from acting.
Sorkin is said to have based his screenplay on the biography “Steve Jobs,” by Walter Isaacson and he’s said he’s basically boiled the story down to three key moments in Jobs’ life:
“I hope I don’t get killed by the studio for giving too much away, but this entire movie is going to be three scenes, and three scenes only. That all take place in real time. Real time is when a half hour for you in the audience is the same as a half hour for the character on the screen, there will be no time cuts and each will take place before a product launch. Backstage before a product launch. The first one being the Mac, the second one being NeXT after he had left Apple and the third one being the iPod.”
