UPDATE: Well, Robert Downey Jr.‘s publicity tour continued tonight and while on “The Late Show with David Letterman” he back-tracked on his comments earlier in the day with regard to an Iron Man 4 saying:
“There’s no plans for an Iron Man 4. There’s no script for Iron Man 4, but they do have a plan and I think they’re going to announce it…they’ve very secretive about it… Just between us, no [Iron Man 4 is not happening], but I’m going to do other stuff with Marvel. I’m still going to be involved with Marvel and there’s gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen.”
I can only assume Downey is having fun with fans and playing with his words at the behest of his management team. Good for him. The original article from earlier follows along with video of Downey’s appearance on Letterman.

Robert Downey Jr. has The Judge coming out this weekend and he’s been making the press rounds and while people will pretend to care about his new movie all anyone really cares about are movies that haven’t been made yet. In this case that movie is a possible Iron Man 4, something Downey has said in the past he’s not all that interested in doing. Well, he recently made headlines jokingly saying he would do Iron Man 4 if Mel Gibson directed. That got taken out of context and so Downey continued the joke saying he’d only do it if Howard Stern directed, which will most likely make headlines since click, click, click… need that advertising money.
However, Downey has now confirmed a follow-up to Iron Man 3 is indeed on the way on Ellen DeGeneres‘s show saying, “I know there’s going to be more Marvel movies, and they have big ideas of how to do it best… We’re in the middle of negotiations [for another one], blah blah blah.” However, when gently pressed he said, “Okay, yes… yes.”
Downey will next be seen reprising his role as Tony Stark in next summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and as far as his expectations for the character’s future he told Deadline:
To me, it comes down to what’s the half-life of people enjoying a character? It’s different on TV, where you expect the longevity over seasons while movies get a two or three year break. Marvel keeps stepping up its game, and I appreciate the way Kevin Feige and all the creatives there think. They are as in the creative wheelhouse as any great studio has been at any point. So it becomes a matter of, at what point do I cease to be an asset to what they’re doing, and at what point do I feel I am spending so much time either shooting or promoting these films that I’m not actually able to get off the beachhead and do the kind of other stuff that is good for all of us.
Each one of those movies is spread over two years and some people fit other things in. But I’m not 42, I’m turning 50 and now I’ll have two small kids instead of one grown one, and eight Team Downey projects with people who are imagining I’m not just spending Warner Bros’ money out of vanity, but that I’m taking it seriously. It all has become this thing that has to be figured out. It has come to a head, right now, where the points of departure will be.
Downey is also expected to be in The Avengers 3, though a new rumor suggests there may be a new line-up for that film. Yay.
