Marvel Sets ‘Doctor Strange’ for July 2016 Release Date

Marvel has set a July 8, 2016 release date for the Scott Derrickson-directed Doctor Strange, a date that currently has no competition, though Bourne 5 is one week later and ID Forever Part I and David Yates’ Tarzan are one week earlier, though I hardly think Marvel is too concerned.

As of now no one has been cast in the lead role, though Joaquin Phoenix appears to have the role if he wants it, and with this new development it would almost seem as if he’s finally signed on the dotted line. Phoenix, if you remember, was, at one point, up for the role of Lex Luthor in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Has he finally found a comic book character he is willing to play?

In the comics, Doctor Strange is a surgeon that suffers a life-changing car accident and eventually heads to the Himalayas, gains psychic powers and saves the day, protecting the Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Filming is expected to begin in May 2015 at Pinewood Studios. [Screen Daily]
