Tarantino’s ‘Hateful Eight’ Coming Fall 2015, ‘Dragon 3’ Bumped to 2017

I know, a story about a new Quentin Tarantino movie and the third film in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise doesn’t exactly feel right, but both have to do with their respective film’s release dates so I think it works.

First off, The Weinstein Co. has issued a press release Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight will begin shooting in January for a Fall 2015 release and along with that news the release announced it will receive the widest 70mm release in over 20 years”. It will be curious to see if those roadshow plans also remain.

The ensemble Western centers on bounty hunters returning human plunder to a town called Red Rock in exchange for hefty rewards when they run into a Southerner on the road. The three of them, along with their driver arrive at a haberdashery to take shelter from an oncoming blizzard. The proprietors are nowhere to be found, only four men in their ‘stead. From there the story plays out in one location.

As of now no cast is confirmed though Kurt Russell does seem to be expected to star and rumored to be up for possible roles, though nothing has been announced yet.

In other news, Dreamworks has announced they are moving How to Train Your Dragon 3 from a planned June 2016 release to June 9, 2017. One can speculate this has to do with the slow performance of How to Train Your Dragon 2 at the domestic box office, though the film has finally found its legs overseas as it is now just shy of $600 million worldwide.

The press release announcing the new date said:

On the heels of the success of their latest epic adventure, Hiccup and Toothless have plans to soar across the big screen once again with the announcement of the third chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon series shifting to a June 9, 2017 release date. From the same creative team as the first two films, writer/director Dean DeBlois and producer Bonnie Arnold, How to Train Your Dragon 3 continues the story where the sequel leaves off. Returning cast includes Jay Baruchel as Hiccup, America Ferrera as Astrid and Cate Blanchett as Valka.
