First Clip from James Franco’s ‘Sound and the Fury’

I was originally going to see James Franco‘s William Faulkner adaptation The Sound and Fury in Toronto on Friday, but I think I’m opting to see the Viggo Mortensen starrer Far from Men instead. After all, I doubt it will be long before this one is streaming or at least available domestically while Far from Men may take a little longer to find itself a domestic distributor.

That said, the first clip from Franco’s new movie has arrived as it will be having its world premiere this Friday at the Venice Film Festival, followed by a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday.

I caught Franco’s previous Faulkner adaptation As I Lay Dying at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival (read the review here) and it was an intriguing experimental piece, but the pace at which he churns these things out makes me wonder just how much better he might be once he finds something he’s truly passionate about.

The Sound and the Fury stars Franco alongside Joey King, Tim Blake Nelson, Ahna O’Reilly, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Scott Haze and Jon Hamm and I’ve included the first pic along with the official synopsis below.

Set in Mississippi at the turn of the 20th century, The Sound and the Fury portrays the decline and fall of the Compsons, a once proud, aristocratic Southern family. Translating William Faulkner’s famously challenging experimental prose into the language of cinema, The Sound and the Fury reveals the secrets and betrayals that have tarnished the family name and continue to haunt the Compson children.

Told in distinct chapters, the film juxtaposes the unique perspectives of the three Compson brothers: mute, man¬child Benjy; sensitive, melancholic Quentin; and cold, calculating Jason. Meanwhile, the fate of the lone Compson sister, Caddy, gradually unfolds across all three narratives. The Sound and the Fury spans three decades in the lives of the Compsons and offers, through this single family’s history, a meditation on the relationship between time, memory and history.
