Charlie Hunnam Set for ‘King Arthur’, Rumored for ‘Escape from New York’ Remake

Charlie Hunnam is about to be seen in the final season of “Sons of Anarchy” on FX and after that it will likely be a long stream of movies and the schedule is starting to fill up. He was recently named the title star of Guy Ritchie‘s Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, he will almost certainly be back for Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim sequel and now he’s rumored to be the top contender to play Snake Plissken in the remake of John Carpenter‘s Escape from New York alongside a couple others still in the mix.

Hunnam as well as Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey”, The Guest) and Jon Bernthal (Fury, “The Walking Dead”) are reported to be the top three choices for the lead role, looking to pick up after Kurt Russell as Plissken, a convicted bank robber in a crime-riddled New York City-turned-maximum security prison, coerced into saving the President of the United States after Air Force One crash lands in Manhattan. In past iterations, both Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner were up for the lead.

At one point both Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) and Brett Ratner were attached to direct the film with a screenplay by Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down), but as of now it sounds like there is no director or firm screenplay in place as Starlog brings us this news with also a few updated plot details.

Apparently this updated version will be “more team-based, as Snake Plissken traverses through a treacherous New York landscape with a rogues gallery of criminals who look to leave the island-turned-prison in exchange for the rescue of the captured U.S. President.” As for said team:

“Plissken’s team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President’s security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken’s former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.”
