‘Sin City 2’ Off to Terrible Start at Box Office While ‘If It Stay’ Rakes in $1.1 Million

Well, it looks like the first few nails have already been hammered into the Sin City: A Dame to Kill For coffin as the film opened last night to a miserable $475,000. On the opposite side of the spectrum is the young adult adaptation If I Stay starring Chloe Grace Moretz, which brought in $1.1 million and looks like it’s going to be your weekend winner, possibly up around $20 million for the weekend, well above its $14 million tracking.

The weekend’s other new wide release, When the Game Stands Tall, didn’t fair any better than Sin City. In fact, it opened two hours earlier than Sin City on Thursday, with screenings beginning at 7 PM in 2,180 theaters where it managed only $425,000. Of the three new releases this weekend, however, this is the one of which very little was expected.

Looking at the predictions below, that $20 million tracking number for Sin City 2 clearly threw things off and it wasn’t until later in the afternoon that word came out how well If I Stay was doing in presales.

I’ve included both Laremy’s predictions and the average reader predictions directly below and I’ll be back on Sunday with box office estimates. To see Laremy’s full list of predictions and all 90 reader predictions for this weekend click here.
