Originally set to hit theaters on June 10, 2016, Sony has now decided to delay The Amazing Spider-Man 3 two years to 2018, the year The Amazing Spider-Man 4 was previously expected to hit theaters. However, they aren’t giving up on the idea of building a world around the web-slinger despite the lackluster returns from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which had been expected to gross nearly $1 billion worldwide this summer, but has so far only amassed $706 million.
Instead of a new Spider-Man film in 2016, the studio is moving forward with The Sinister Six with writer/director Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods), releasing on November 11, 2016.
The film features an all-star lineup of Spider-Man villains, all of which were teased in the Spider-Man 2‘s end credits including Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Rhino, Vulture, Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio. No word on which one of those villains may show up, but it seems likely Dane DeHaan would return as Green Goblin and Paul Giamatti as Rhino. I also wonder if they’ll bring back Andrew Garfield in any capacity, because if not, how exactly does the story of the villains play out without Spider-Man?
There was no word on the Venom film to be written and directed by Alex Kurtzman who last spoke of the film saying, “Everybody is still figuring it out. It’s all up for grabs, right now. We’re just trying to figure it out. Everything is still on the table, right now. Because it’s a universe outside of the Spider-Man universe, even though it’s connected to it, those movies have to stand on their own. So, we’ll see. We’ll see how it goes.”
Meanwhile, Sony has moved the Seth Gordon-directed adaptation of the video game Uncharted into the old Spider-Man 3 slot of June 10, 2016.
That film is expected to tell the story of a 400-year-old clue in the coffin of Sir Francis Drake setting Nathan Drake, a modern-day fortune hunter on an exploration for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, leading to the discovery of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The search turns deadly when Drake becomes stranded on the island and hunted by mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island. [THR]
