The animated box office hasn’t enjoyed a very successful summer so far with Rio 2 failing to outperform its predecessor both domestically and worldwide, someone in the comment section had to remind me Mr. Peabody and Sherman even existed and How to Train Your Dragon 2 really failing to ignite much interest anywhere despite overwhelmingly positive reviews. Granted, The LEGO Movie is the year’s second highest grossing release, just a shade below Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but will there be a hugely successful summer animated movie? The last hope is Disney’s Planes: Fire & Rescue.
Originally planned as a direct-to-video release, Disney went theatrical with Planes in 2013 and managed $219.7 million worldwide on the film, which carried a reported $50 million budget. The sequel comes less than a year later and considering most audiences think it’s another Pixar release given the similarity to Cars, this one may be able to become the summer’s big animated release. After all, it seems families have been saving their money.
Planes: Fire and Rescue hits theaters on July 18.
