This week’s new releases didn’t exactly get off to a banner start on Wednesday, with Tammy kicking things off with $6.2 million and a dismal “C+” CinemaScore, Deliver Us from Evil brought in $2.8 million with a not-too-much-better “B-” CinemaScore and Earth to Echo may have received an “A-” CinemaScore, but it only brought in $2.6 million. Looking over Laremy’s and the readers’ predictions, I’d say people have gone a little too high, but who knows, maybe the weekend will be better and word of mouth won’t be too damaging.
The weekend will clearly belong to Transformers: Age of Extinction, which is now up to $412.6 million worldwide. Laremy is a little more bullish with his second weekend prediction of $47 million while the reader average comes out to $43.2 million. I personally think it might go just a tick higher thanks to Paramount releasing the film on a Friday rather than attempting to play the Wednesday release game with this one, could be interesting to see how it plays out.
As for the other three, while Laremy and the readers all went over $20 million on Tammy and Deliver Us from Evil, it wouldn’t surprise me if neither topped that number, but it’s tough to tell. As Laremy pointed out in his predictions article, “last year over the July 5-7 weekend the top 12 made nearly $230 million, while I’ve got this one coming in at a paltry $140 million.” That’s a rather large discrepancy.
