For as much as I enjoyed J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 Star Trek reboot, I disliked the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, just as much and now Paramount has handed the keys to the Star Trek kingdom to a first time director in Roberto Orci who recently spoke with Geoff Boucher on his “Humans from Earth” podcast, discussing the future of the franchise.
Personally I’m a fan of the original, 1960s television show and movies, and felt the first movie tapped into that while the second felt like a fake imitation. Orci seems to be implying Star Trek 3 will get back to what made the television show great:
“In [Star Trek Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started… The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – were an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in [Star Trek 3] they are closer to the original series characters than you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.”
As much as I like hearing that, I also hear that and sort of wish they’d scrap the idea of more movies and just bring back the television show, but I don’t see that happening any time soon, though I believe Netflix and Paramount were discussing it at one point.
Star Trek 3 does not have a release date, though it’s expected some time in 2016.
