Well, they have been threatening us for some time, but now it’s official, Universal will take over duties on Legendary’s Pacific Rim 2, set for an April 7, 2017 release with Guillermo del Toro back to direct a screenplay from Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand).
The initial report comes from BuzzFeed with a quote from del Toro saying:
The characters I love will return. Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam), Mako (Rinko Kikuchi), Newt (Charlie Day), Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau (Ron Perlman) – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.
First off, come on, who are we kidding? You know Perlman’s going to be in this. In addition to this, as explained in the video below, del Toro is also developing an animated series surround Pacific Rim.
As for now, del Toro is completing work on Crimson Peak, set for release on October 16, 2015, and has “The Strain” hitting FX, premiering Sunday, July 13.
