The impression I’m getting from audiences as of late is “Who gives a shit?” I can’t exactly clarify that opinion any more than simply saying it’s something I feel is in the air. If I were to script it it would go like this:
THINK LIKE A MAN TOO? JERSEY BOYS? EDGE OF TOMORROW?
Who gives a shit?
It’s not a complicated scene, but it seems to speak to the feeling I’m getting from so many people over the last month or so, and last week in particular where it seemed the prospect of doing anything other than going to the theater was preferable. Is it because it’s summer?
Two years ago Think Like a Man rocked the box office to the tune of $33.6 million, its sequel, Think Like a Man Too couldn’t even manage $30 million, coming in at $29.2 million. Was the title too on the nose? Think Like a Man Also is essentially what it was saying, with marketing suggesting “only this time in Las Vegas” and it sounds like that’s what it was.
Then there’s Jersey Boys, which managed $13.3 million on a $40 million budget. Having seen the film I’m not sure what the thought was when it was greenlit, but they are going to need to go back in and add some animated characters to spice that movie up if they want to even match the budget before it’s out of theaters.
The holdovers were 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2, both of which dipping 50% or more from their opening weekends coming in at $27.4 million and $24.7 million respectively. When you can’t even get families to come in to support a well-reviewed family film when the last one in theaters was The LEGO Movie it’s as if a bomb went off in the theaters and everyone is afraid to go.
Next up is the 165-minute Transformers: Age of Extinction, will audiences brave that to the tune of $100+ million? I’m guessing no.
