HBO must have known I was a little under the weather as a small gift in the form of the first five episodes of the upcoming series “The Leftovers“, premiering June 29, arrived today and I just finished watching the pilot episode of which I’ll say…

…I enjoyed it quite a bit. The show begins with the scene we’ve all seen in the trailers of the woman in the parking lot and her baby disappearing and the show moves from there to three years into the future. The best part of it all is it sticks to its title in that it focuses on the people that were left behind and doesn’t seem like it will become overly concerned with the “whys”, though such questions certainly remain, how could they not?
Here the departure of 2% of the world’s population is considered “The Sudden Departure”, though “The Rapture” is heard heavily throughout the pilot episode, though most often dismissively. The show focuses on a few key groups, one being the police department led by Chief Garvey (Justin Theroux) while his son (Chris Zylka) is taking part in something that isn’t clearly defined, though definitely intriguing.
Then you have the GR, which is short for “Guilty Remnant” and I’m not sure if that is ever made explicitly clear in this episode as I had to look it up, and the reasoning behind these people’s actions remains a little cloudy. Ann Dowd (Compliance, “True Detective”) has a major part in this group.
I don’t want to say too much as I would rather get a full grasp of the show before giving it a thumbs up or down, but for now I’m more than intrigued and I also thought it would be nice to give paid subscribers a little bit of an early look at my thoughts on this one.
