First ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Clip Yells ‘Go!’

I’m quite curious to see how Dawn of the Planet of the Apes turns out. The typical studio sequel process is “bigger means better” and by bigger it typically means big action sequences, explosions and nonsense that doesn’t particularly pertain to the storyline. In looking at what we’ve seen from the marketing so far, you could say Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is definitely leaning toward a lot more action, but then again, that just could be the studio using action beats to sell the film because this first clip suggests something else. What we don’t get from this clip is any idea of setting.

We already know the film picks up 15 years after the events of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the focus is on a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

What I also find interesting in this clip is that all Caesar says is “Go”. It’s been 15 years and I wonder how far they’ll have taken the apes in terms of speech, after all, with so many of the humans wiped out who would they even listen to to learn the language?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 11.
