I haven’t seen a Resident Evil movie since the third one in 2007, which means I never saw the franchise’s turn to 3D with Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Retribution, but I didn’t avoid the sequels out of some dislike for the franchise. In fact, the Resident Evil movies aren’t too bad, at least for movies you never expect to be good in the first place.
Now the original plan was to have Resident Evil 6 in theaters on September 12 of this year, that clearly isn’t going to happen, but writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson has confirmed with Collider the sixth film is coming and that it will most likely be the last. “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the working title,” Anderson said. “It may end up being the final title, but that’s what’s written on the front page of my script. I’m right in the middle of [the first draft].”
There are no set production or release dates just yet, but Anderson hopes there will be an announcement soon and he did confirm the film will be released in 3D adding:
“I firmly believe that you have to start thinking about the 3D even in the writing process. You cannot make a great 3D movie by just — it’s not some special sauce that you can sprinkle on. You make the dish and then you make hot sauce on top–it doesn’t work well like that. Yes, you can do a last minute conversion. You can not shoot the movie thinking about 3D and do a last minute conversion and it can be a 3D movie, it’s just not gonna be a great 3D movie. I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know — because I’ve done so much of it — will translate very well into 3D. Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It’s really, even from this point, 3D is something I’m definitely thinking about.”
So, depending on how quickly Anderson writes, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Resident Evil 6 in September of next year and his wife, Milla Jovovich, will be back to star as Alice for one final go ’round. You interested?
