Friday Box Office: ‘Fault in Our Stars’ Heading to $50 Million Weekend, ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Not So Much

The writing was on the wall for both Edge of Tomorrow and The Fault in Our Stars before the weekend even began, it was, for me at least, just hard to understand how a well-marketed and well-reviewed film such as Edge of Tomorrow could end up such a box office dud. The success for Fault in Our Stars is less surprising.

To begin, Fault in Our Stars will be looked at as a sign Shailene Woodley is a box office star, but I think we all know it’s the material that’s largely driving this one, just as much it was fandom that helped out Divergent. Fault brought in a huge $26.1 million Friday, which includes the $8.2 million from Thursday night showings, on its way to a likely $50 million weekend.

As for Edge, it managed $10.6 million on Friday, which includes $1.8 million from Thursday night screenings, heading toward a weekend of only about $30 million. On a budget of $178 million, that’s not going to pack it as it’s looking to end up similar to 2013’s Elysium, which opened to $29.8 million, heading toward a $93 million domestic total. The big question for Edge is just how well it will end up doing overseas where it had brought in $41 million heading into the weekend.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a complete wrap up of the weekend.
