Box Office Actuals: ‘Maleficent’ is Jolie’s Highest Opener, ‘A Million Ways’ Falls a Little More

I don’t know about you, but it’s a little amazing to me that Angelina Jolie hasn’t had a film open higher than Maleficent‘s $69.4 million. Then again, you look at her filmography and I can’t help but wonder what exactly has Jolie done to make her considered such a big star other than simply being Angelina Jolie? Sure, she’s had some solid performances, but none of them are exactly general audience “must sees”.

Quick, what do you think is Jolie’s highest grossing domestic release to date? Now, what are the movies you most often think of when you think of Jolie? Now

Now, here are her top five domestic releases. Are they the ones you were thinking of?

  1. Kung Fu Panda – $215,434,591
  2. Mr. & Mrs. Smith – $186,336,279
  3. Kung Fu Panda 2 – $165,249,063
  4. Shark Tale – $160,861,908
  5. Wanted – $134,508,551

Now, here are her most popular roles based on number of votes at IMDb:

  1. Wanted (2008) – $134,508,551
  2. Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) – $186,336,279
  3. Kung Fu Panda (2008) – $215,434,591
  4. Salt (2010) – $118,311,368
  5. Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) – $101,648,571

Is that more to what you were thinking?

When I think of Jolie I guess I probably first think of Girl, Interrupted, for which she won an Oscar, and then perhaps her awful Tomb Raider films. Yet, these are hardly her biggest titles. Maybe I’m crazy, but is Jolie really that much of a movie star or is she more of a celebrity alone?

Otherwise, this weekend saw A Million Ways to Die in the West bomb to the tune of $16.7 million while X-Men: Days of Future Past added another $32.5 million to its domestic total as its worldwide total is now over $500 million in ten days of release.

Oh, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has now made $497.3 million internationally, which is just under $2 million more than the first film made at the international box office. Yet, it’s domestic total is still $70 million less than the first film. Can it catch the 2012 release domestically? I don’t think so.

I’ve listed the current top ten from the points and accuracy leaderboards directly below and you can find the full leaderboard here. For the complete box office top ten and points awarded for this weekend specifically click here.

NOTE: I updated the script calculating the percentage accuracy leaderboard and there is still one minor glitch I have noticed that I still need to fix, but these percentages are much, much more accurate.
