‘Godzilla’ is Camera Shy, Probably Because He’s So Fat

Based on the number of pictures and trailers we’ve seen for Godzilla. and how many good looks at the monster we’ve seen, it’s a little surprising to learn the film still keeps the big nuclear lizard hidden for most of the film’s duration. Over at Vulture director Gareth Edwards comments saying, “[If] you throw everything you can at the screen, you’ve got nowhere else to go,” which makes me say, Well, if the only place you have to “go” is to show me a CG monster then is it really worth the journey?

Edwards adds that the glimpses at Godzilla early on without putting him entiretly on display is not an attempt “to frustrate the audience, but to tease them. It’s kind of like cinematic foreplay.”

This isn’t to say the movie is nothing more than leading up to a monster reveal as Edwards definitely thought all this out saying, “What we were trying to do when we designed the movie was to incrementally build and build. So hopefully, you get the big climax at the end and it has the maximum power possible–and then it’s the end credits.”

Of course, perhaps the big guy has reason to be shy as THR quotes Japanese fans mocking the monster’s appearance. Comments include “He’s couch potato Godzilla;” “It’s got no neck;” “He Supersized;” “Marshmallow-Godzilla?” and then it gets personal… “Whichever way you look at it, he’s an American fatty,” posted one fan. “He got fat in America on cola and pizza,” Tweeted another.

Good stuff.

Godzilla finally stomps stateside on May 16 and Warner Bros. just released a full gallery of pictures, 25 to be exact, many of which you’ve seen, some you haven’t. I’ve put the entire gallery in this post on the first and second pages.
