Criterion just released feature directorial debut, the 1981 heist thriller Thief (buy it here) starring James Caan and in conjunction with the release they offer the first seven minutes of the film online in high definition, taking a look at the first heist.
The film follows a rather traditional narrative seen in many films with Caan playing an ex-con safecracker that’s talked into one final diamond heist before he calls it quits, however, Mann’s direction and just the feel and vibe you get from his features elevates it above its stereotypical plot trappings. This opening scene gives you an idea for the mood of the picture, the rain-soaked pavement and the all-’80s electronic score from Tangerine Dream.
I’ve seen Thief a couple times, but haven’t seen the new Criterion edition, though it would be great to see more of Mann’s films make it into the collection, though I’m not holding my breath.
