Since starting RopeofSilicon in 2003 I have come to know a lot of the regular commenters on the site, many of which strive to get involved in the movie business themselves. This is why I’m so excited to present the following short film, which was written and directed by Bryan Baca, whom, unless I’m mistaken, was around the age of 13 when he first started frequenting RopeofSilicon.com. He’s been a regular ever since and now he’s directed his first official short film, titled Identity Theft.
I actually first watched the short back in July of 2013 and I was a little nervous doing so. The last thing I want to do is have someone send me their work and then have me not like it. Fortunately, I enjoyed it and in looking for a way to describe it after watching it I emailed Bryan saying it felt a little like “David Cronenberg-light meets Sam Raimi”.
As for his inspiration, he told me, “The flicks I turned most to throughout the whole thing were The Mist and Wages of Fear just because it’s an all timer for me. I wish more movies had that low-key tension and storytelling where you feel like you’re learning about the character as they deal with a current situation instead of just ‘he’s depressed and angsty because is brother died 20 years back.'”
As for the plot:
“While attempting to court the girl of his dreams through an online instant messaging program, Shayne Edwin encounters some unlikely opposition.”
I think you’ve heard enough from me. Check out the short film below and I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
