2014 Directors Guild Nominees Include McQueen, Cuaron, Russell, Scorsese and Greengrass

One of the biggest precursor award nominees have arrived as the Directors Guild of America (DGA) have announced their nominees for the 2014 Directors Guild Awards and the nominees are Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), David O. Russell (American Hustle) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street).

This means, yet again, the Coens are overlooked for Inside Llewyn Davis, which is beginning to look more and more like an honorable mention for the year from many of these organizations, but I’m still keeping them in my Best Director Oscar predictions for just a while longer.

Otherwise, there are no surprises here and if Greengrass was to edge out the Coens for a nomination I would think twice about it. Possible Oscar surprises might include a nomination for Spike Jonze (Her) or John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks) at this point, but the race is hardly a nail-biter.

You can check out my just-updated Best Director predictions right here and, again, are the nominees. The 66th Annual DGA Awards will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
