Dipping only $400,000 lower than estimates, the final opening weekend take for Thor: The Dark World was $85.7 million, which is about $19 million more than the 2011 original. However, as much as people were trying to declare “3D is back!” with the success of Gravity, Thor 2 saw only 39% of its ticket sales from 3D showings compared to the 60% the original enjoyed. You can look at this as either bad news for the state of 3D or as good news for Thor 2 considering it made about 29% more than the original and did so without inflated 3D ticket prices, just inflated ticket prices alone.
Next we come to 12 Years a Slave, which didn’t budge from its estimated numbers, scoring $6.6 million in its latest expansion as it added 734 theaters. It’s domestic cume after one month in theaters is now $17.3 million.
Losing about $400,000 from its estimated number, About Time actuals came in at $4.7 million as it expanded to 1,200 theaters and I expect will add more next weekend where it will face some incoming competition from The Best Man Holiday.
And finally, in limited release, The Book Thief opened in four theaters and made $3,000 less than estimated, bringing in $105,000 for a $26,250 per theater average.
