Box Office Actuals: Leaderboard Updated as ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’ Tops the Weekend

It’s interesting to evaluate the box office result for Sony’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. On the surface it isn’t all that impressive as it finished with $34 million, only $4 million more than the first one brought in back in 2009. However, that first one came in with a reported $100 million budget while the sequel’s production figure was trimmed down to $78 million. That’s a considerable savings and to have made $4 million more on the opening weekend means they must be smiling over there. Expect #3 to be announced soon.

Breaking free of its limited release last weekend it appears Rush just doesn’t have what American audiences want, at least not in droves. The film managed an unspectacular $10 million this weekend, but Universal can’t be too upset since they didn’t pay out the nose on this one as they are only distributing the pic domestically. But then again, it’s overseas where this modestly budgeted ($38 million) pic is likely to thrive.

Pulling up in fourth and fifth place were the other two films in this week’s Rope of Silicon Box OFfice Challenge, Baggage Claim and Joseph Godron-Levitt‘s Don Jon. Neither sparked a lot of interest from audiences bringing in $9 million and $8.6 million respectively.

In other box office news, Battle of the Year 3D enjoyed one weekend in the top ten and fell 56% this weekend to #12 and newcomer, the IMAX release of Metallica Through the Never brought in $1.6 million from 305 screens. It’s unlikely it was the only film showing on those screens as the IMAX 3D release of The Wizard of Oz was still out there, also on 305 screens, but it only had one showing in several of those theaters per day and managed a mere $557,233.

I’ve listed the current top ten for both leaderboards directly below, but you can see the full list of rankings right here and for the complete box office top ten and points awarded for this weekend specifically click here.
