Hugh Jackman Joins Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Chappie’

After not being overwhelmingly taken by both District 9 or Elysium, I can’t say I have the utmost confidence in writer/director Neill Blomkamp‘s next film, Chappie, a comedy centered on a robot (voiced by Sharlto Copley) imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters (Ninja and Yolandi Visser) who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. Now, Hugh Jackman has joined the cast.

There is no word on Jackman’s level of involvement, but it doesn’t appear to be a major bit of casting as he revealed the news at the Zurich Film Festival during a press conference saying, “I am doing a role in Neill [Blomkamp’s] new film, called Chappie, which we shoot in Johannesburg. I’m there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year.”

Blomkamp wrote the script with his wife and District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell. Chappie is already set for a March 27, 2015 release. Dev Patel co-stars. [Screen Daily]
