There’s no doubting Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is going to be the weekend winner and as Laremy pointed out in his prediction piece, it’s the first time a family-targeted feature (not including One Direction: This is Us) will win the box office since mid-July. So there’s clearly going to be a little bit of demand there, but how much and how beloved is the first film?
Laremy went a $2.5 million higher than the reader aggregate with his prediction as the readers see a $44.3 million weekend for the sequel, which is still higher than their predicted $13.1 million finish for Rush in second. Rush had a bit of an underwhelming limited release last weekend, which now looks like it was a bit of a major gamble for Universal. Had the film taken off and averaged something around $100,000 for the five locations it opened in perhaps prognosticators would be a little more bullish, but as it stands it’s going to need some help. Perhaps the fact it’s a really good movie (read my review here) will help?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s Don Jon is going to battle it out with the sophomore weekend for Prisoners with the readers predicting a $10.6 million finish, $1.5 million below Laremy’s prediction and perhaps not even within sniffing distance of Prisoners. Personally the finish for both Prisoners and Rush are what I’m most interested in this weekend as I think both are films everyone should make an effort to see.
And finally the weekend’s new, true stinker, Baggage Claim. I’m sorry, but this movie is terrible, but I’m sure it will manage a small amount of business with the reader aggregate coming in, again, a little lower than Laremy at $10 million.
