I’m curious, why is We’re the Millers enjoying so much success at the theater? Is it because of Jason Sudeikis? Is it because it’s really that funny? Or could it have anything to do with Jennifer Aniston? I could ask the same thing about the 2011 comedy Horrible Bosses, which also starred Aniston and Sudeikis along with Jason Bateman and Charlie Day. That film went on to make over $209 million worldwide on a $35 million budget… Why?
Maybe you think it’s Bateman. Well, how about Identity Thief… Did that do well because of Bateman or Melissa McCarthy? Considering The Heat ultimately made more than Identity Thief I think I’ll have to lean more toward McCarthy on this one.
What I’m trying to say, is that while Warner Bros. is putting Horrible Bosses 2 together with the director of Sex Drive and That’s My Boy, Sean Anders, to replace the original Horrible Bosses (and Identity Thief) director, Seth Gordon, and while they have confirmed the return of Bateman, Sudeikis and Day and most likely Jamie Foxx, I think they’re going to need a heavy female hitter to really sell the film all over again.
Original screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are drafting the screenplay and I sincerely hope they’ve written in a part for Aniston or some kind of female comedian because I’m not sure it will survive without one. What do you think?
