Finally eOne will be sending Diana to a film festival as the project directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and starring Naomi Watts as Princess Diana will have a gala screening at the Zurich Film Festival, which runs from September 26 – October 6. The fact eOne has been so coy with this feature has me thinking it won’t have much of an impact at the Oscars, here’s to hoping I’m wrong.
Among the films joining Diana in the lineup are Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, The Railway Man, J.C. Chandor‘s Cannes stand-out All is Lost (read my review here) and David Gordon Green‘s Joe starring Nicolas Cage. [THR]
Additionally, Denmark’s Danish Film Institute and film industry organizations will announce the film they will be submitting for consideration at the 2014 Oscars in the Best Foreign Language category on September 26 (via indieWire. The organization has boiled it down to Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt (read my review here), Joshua Oppenheimer‘s documentary The Act of Killing (read my thoughts on the film here) and Michael Noer‘s Northwist, which is the least likely of the bunch.
Looking at the selection I can’t believe it would be anything other than Vinterberg’s The Hunt. I don’t know the complete history of the Foreign Language race, but outside of Waltz with Bashir I don’t personally know of any other documentaries that have been nominated for a Foreign Language Oscar and the film, On top of that, I have to believe it’s a strong contender for a Best Documentary nomination as it is.
I would also love to see Magnolia get behind a campaign to score Mads Mikkelsen at least some consideration for Best Actor, though I think that will be incredibly unlikely considering they did nothing to push Ann Dowd last year for Compliance.
