Instead of taking their wares to Comic Con, Disney keeps things to themselves and has established the D23 Expo in which they preview their upcoming films and whatnot to a crowd of Mickey ear-wearing fans. The biggest news to come out of the event so far is in relation to Pixar’s upcoming films and I’ll begin with Up director Bob Peterson‘s The Good Dinosaur, from which you see concept art directly above.
Slashfilm reports the primary characters of the film are a family of farming Apatosaurs, with John Lithgow voicing the father, Frances McDormand as the mother, Bill Hader and Neil Patrick Harris as brothers Forrest and Cliff, Judy Greer as a character name Ivy and Lucas Neff as the lead character, Arlo. The site has additional details on the plot, which poses the biggest “what if?” ever — What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?
Another detail associated with the film is that it will feature a new Monsters University short film titled “Party Central”, which was apparently screened at the convention. Directed by Kelsey Mann, story supervisor on Monsters University, and it shows what happens when monsters try and throw a frat party and no one shows up.
The Good Dinosaur hits theaters on May 30, 2014
News then turned to Pete Docter‘s Inside Out, a film originally described as one that would take you to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen: the world inside the human mind. Well, some additional information has arrived along with the voice cast.
Slashfilm again has the report, quoting John Lasseter who says Inside Out is “one of the most unique films I’ve ever been associated with — a magical, wonderful, original film.” Here’s their report:
The concept is one, they said, that can only be done in animation. We’re inside Riley, age 11. She’s a happy, adventurous kid from Minnesota who loves hockey. But her family movies to San Francisco and everything changes. The characters are her emotions. Anger, pictured as red with a flattop, is voiced by Lewis Black. Mindy Kaling is Disgust, teen and green. Bill Hader is fear, purple and puzzled, in a black and white checkered shirt. Phyllis Smith is Sadness, blue and wearing glasses.
And the most important character is Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler, in a yellow dress, with short blue hair.
Footage from the film was shown, which you can read a description of right here.
Inside Out is slated for a June 19, 2015 release.
