Remember Irish director John Carney? What? No? Do you remember the film Once? Do you remember the song “Falling Slowly” which won an Oscar back in 2008? Ringing any bells now? Well Carney directed that film and since then his work has gone relatively unnoticed, but now he’s back in the limelight with a new film ready to have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Can a Song Save Your Life?
Keira Knightley stars as Gretta, heartbroken and alone in New York City after breaking up with her musician boyfriend (Adam Levine), she finds laughter and rejuvenation with a down-on-his-luck record producer (Mark Ruffalo) who recognizes her musical talent and opens up an entire city of possibility for both of them.
I’m hoping this film will be every bit as good as Once was (which if you haven’t seen it, get on it right now). This is one I’m certainly going to make a high priority to see, I just hope the schedule works out because my list of movies to see is growing fast.
You can check out the complete 2013 Toronto Film Festival lineup right here and it will be updating with more films over the next week or so.
