Benicio del Toro has just landed a central role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a role described by Deadline.com as a character built to be part of future Marvel films. He joins Glenn Close, recently cast as a member of the intergalactic space patrol Nova Corp, in the film, which will be directed by James Gunn (Slither).
The film will reportedly be set in the future and feature the titular team fighting an evil race called the Badoom, and in the process they would supposedly travel back in time and cross paths with some of the Avengers team. Speculation says that Thanos, the giant being seen in the post-credits sequence following The Avengers would be in the film and Guardians of the Galaxy would serve as a precursor to The Avengers 2.
On top of the del Toro casting, THR reveals “Doctor Who” star Karen Gillan will play an unknown villain in the film.
Additional members of the cast include Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey and Ophelia Lovibond.
The film is slated for an August 1, 2014 release. Any speculation as to what his role may be?
