Nine years after their first meeting we meet Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) once again, this time in Paris in Before Sunset, the follow-up to 1995’s Before Sunrise. This time the script was co-written by director Richard Linklater and his two stars and it’s truly one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
When we last left Celine and Jesse it was at a train station in Vienna in June of 1995 and a promise to meet again six months later in that very location. Nine years have passed and the meeting never took place.
Jesse is now married with a child and an accomplished author, with a book he’s written entirely based on his night with Celine. His book tour has brought him to Paris and, seeing he was going to be in town, Celine decides to stop by, rekindling the flame that was first lit nine years earlier and clearly hasn’t burned out.
In the map below we follow their journey through Paris beginning at the famed Shakespeare and Company bookstore and ending in Celine’s apartment.
This is the second in a trio of maps tracing the locations in all three of the Before films. You can find the others at the following links:
By clicking on the list of moments from the film in the left-hand column the map on the right will change to preview information from each location. You’ll be met with addresses, images and in many cases clips from the film along with brief commentary on each location. Like any other time you use Google Maps, you can zoom in all the way down to street level and zoom back out. In some instances I have included a “More details” link, which will take you to a closer look at some locations to see how they appear now compared to how they appeared in the movie.
