2014 Oscars Eying March 2, Bradley Cooper Not Interested in Winning

Since I basically kicked off 2014 Oscar coverage here on the site today with Part One of my “Awards Calendar is also taking shape.

Already added to the schedule are the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will take place on January 18, 2014 followed a day later by the Producers Guild Awards and on January 25 the Directors Guild will announce their winner.

The award calendar becomes a little interesting when you begin to consider other events taking place at the same time. This year’s Oscar ceremony was held on February 24, but dating the ceremony next year begins to get a little difficult when you consider the Super Bowl will be held on February 2 and the Winter Olympics taking place over the course of the following three Sundays leaving March 2, 2014 as the most likely date for the 2014 Oscars and extending the awards season one more week.

With that date being the most likely and with an announcement expected some time soon you also have to assume the Academy will add an extra week to their nomination announcement, which would give voters a little more time to see the films (something that was considered an issue this year with the earlier nomination announcement) and still open up the chance for audiences to see more of the nominated films.

Personally I think a March date makes the most sense no matter what other events are taking place. Giving people more time to see the movies is smart business. There is no rush to get this thing done and as long as we aren’t knee deep in summer blockbusters people will have no problem spending some time with the Oscars on a Sunday in March.

Now as for that second bit in my headline, Oscar-nominated star of Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper, was chatting with British GQ and had this to say about winning an Oscar:

“I watched my father die and I realized that is the way we are all going to die. For me, it was a switch from knowing something intellectually to knowing it by tangibly experiencing it. It rewired my neurological system. It almost did the opposite of motivating me. It was about keeping the main thing the main thing… So I don’t want to win an Oscar. It would change nothing. Nothing. The things in my life that aren’t fulfilled would not be fulfilled. Career-wise, right now, it’s better that I don’t win one. I don’t want to win. I don’t.”

Well, I don’t know about winning, but with The Place Beyond the Pines, Serena and David O. Russell‘s ABSCAM Project on the horizon, Cooper may want to consider the fact he may, at least, receive another nomination.
